Using Podcasts for language teaching and learning

As a teacher, I can use podcast to find interesting and up to date resources for my classes, to encourage learners to listen to audio materials on topics they are interested in, and I can even make my own podcast, or ask my class to make some. It will be very motivating and attractive.
For example, students can be asked to watch or listen to material as preparation work for discussion during a class.

This is a sample of podcast activity in Language classroom

Level of students: University Students (First Year)

Age: 18-19

Lesson Unit: Listening

For the activity, students can go to this link: http://www.digitalpodcast.com/

Activity:
   1.       Warming up

  • Teacher asks students if they ever listen to any podcasts, then they discuss on it in small groups.
  • Teacher explains to students that they will need to find and listen to an episode of a podcast on a topic they are interested in, and be prepared to present it to their peers
Objective: To make students interested in the topic and find out about each other’s interests.

  2.       Individual Work

  • Students look for and listen to a podcast episode
       Objective: Individual research and listening

  3.       Discussion

  • In small group, each student explains what podcast they listened to, why they chose it, and say  one thing that they liked, one thing that particularly interested them, and one thing that could  improve the podcast. The other students might take notes.
  • The teacher asks several students to report on something interesting they have heard from their  peers
Objective: To improve listening and speaking skill

  4.       Homework

  • Teacher asks students to listen to another podcast from the same series and write a review of the podcast they have listened to.
Objective: To improve listening and writing skill
